'TimeOut' Evaluation

When I finished filming and editing for my film opening, I kept watching it over and over to make sure that everything was in the right place, and that nothing was out of time.
I've enjoyed working on this project, and will be quite sad once it's over, but I have managed with whatever problems have come my way:

Most notably re-filming the Interrogation Scene between myself and Ignatius Santoso; the reasons for this were obvious, as the first and second halves of the scene were filmed two weeks apart, so the lighting look awkward.

I also realised that there was difficulty with finding costume for Iggy & Cory Matthews (The Original Henchman, eventually replaced by Adnan Janjua), who just wore their school uniform, except for blazers and ties, but either way it didn't work, so I eventually re-shot it, with more costume and more detail; I left an overhead light on in the background to make it seem like the scene was set in a rundown factory, while the main lighting was set just over where the dialogue took place.

The scene where D.I. Grant (Me) was kidnapped happened to be a rather interesting shot, as I had to play another part as well; the mysterious kidnapper who assaults Grant and drives away with his captive in the back seat of a car. This was rather difficult as there was no one else to act alongside me, but having two parts to play in different costumes was extremely fun.

One thing which seemed like a crucial decision to my work was cutting a scene; another flashback sequence which SHOWED the disppearance of Jimmy Odd-Socks as well as the chase which happened between him and D.I. Grant, ending in a dramatic decision made by Odd-Socks. I cut this because in the end I preferred viewers being left 'in the dark' and wondering what and how the 'suicide' happened...

Overall, 'TimeOut' has been an enjoyable part of the Media Studies Course, and I can't wait for what comes next.

Location Shots

While I was completing my storyboards for 'TimeOut', I got a rough idea of whereabouts I wanted to do filming, and how I wanted the areas to look:

First off; is the WBS Drama Studio, which I used to shoot the News Reporter Scene & the Interrogation Scene. I thought this kind of space would be adiquate because I'd be able to learn more about lighting the sets I'd use that would require different kinds of lighting.

For the Interrogation Scene, I wanted the Studio to look as if where the Crime Lord (Ignatius Santoso) was talking with D.I. Grant (Me) seemed to be a rundown, abandoned factory with little or no lighting whatsoever: In order to do this, I left on a few of the overhead lights as seen in the background, while I had the other lights at a very dim tone; just shining over where I sat as Grant.

I also shot round the side of my house, as it seemed to create an alleyway, where literally anything can happen; a cat could've gotten intot the shot, or the witness (Max Gilbert) would've been noticed and possibly killed by the unknown figure (also Me) who followed D.I. Grant, assaulted him, and drove him away in a car...

When Grant was thrown into the car, I played both parts in the scene, but tried to disguise the unknown figure as I was also playing him, so I made sure that my head wasn't in any shots at all; and the result turned out to be successful.

The scene where the Witness is interviewed was filmed in a corridor at WBS, as I wanted the Witness to seem young, naive and rather scared of what he saw; and for all I know, he might not've gone to school, but I wanted some feeling of familiarity about my Film Opening when it was finished.

Films that have inspired my work/Age Group

For my Film Opening: I have researched three other thrillers so that I gave myself a basic idea of what 'TimeOut' should be like:

First off, I've taken a glance at the 1993 film re-make of the 60s TV Series 'The Fugitive'; starring Harrison Ford & Tommy Lee Jones, showing a wrongly accused Medic (Ford) - who is accused of murdering his own wife - cope while being on the run from a persuing Cop (Jones).

But what really inspired me for an important part of 'TimeOut' was the Opening Montage; showing flashbacks in a shady blue colour; giving off the effect that something had happened in the past; followed by an interrogation at the Police Station, at which point Ford's character argued back and said that he knew who the real murderer...

Another film that inspired me when I worked on my Film Opening was 1935 Hitchcock Thriller 'The 39 Steps' - based on the book going by the same name - which starred actors Robert Donay & Madeleine Carroll; showing a story in which a Canadian (Donay) is a witness to Gunfire at the London Music Hall, leading him a Wild Goose Chase with only one thing to help him on the way - 'The 39 Steps' - but he doesn't have a clue as to what it means...

This film helped give me the idea of the flashback sequence; soon to be edited in the style of 'The Fugitive'.

Finally; the third film I looked at when I worked of the script for my piece was the 2009 Full On Thriller 'Angels & Demons', starring Tom Hanks & Ewan McGregor.

The story begins with the apparent death of the Pope of Rome, and a replacement is searched for in Vatican City; meanwhile Robert Langdon (Hanks) is searching for the four cardinals, who are soon to be victims of murder...

This film gave me the idea of what kind of scope I wanted 'TimeOut' to have; making it seemed rather large, with everyone realising that someone is missing, and is likely to be killed at any time soon...
